The city has something for visitors of all ages, and the pleasant late-summer weather offers the perfect excuse to escape the everyday for a Reno adventure.

Upcoming Reno Events:

Hot August Nights 25th Anniversary – August 10-13 – Celebrate summer in style where the classic cars rule and rock’n’roll is cool. This event will be held at seven different downtown venues during the week and will feature dozens of concerts, a sock hop, Show-n-Shine, drag racing, and much more! Tickets for the Classic Car Auction are $12 and Hot August Nights Swap Meet is $6 and can be purchased at the gate daily. The drag race event, which costs $10 to attend, puts cars from 1972 or before on display from noon to 10 pm each day.

Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off – August 31- September 5 – Labor Day in Reno is a BBQ-lover’s paradise, as more than 100 tons of ribs are served during the Best in the West Nugget Rib Cook-Off. Grill masters from across the U.S. come to Reno to battle for the title of “Best in the West” while live bands like Blue Oyster Cult and The Family Stone keep the party going just three miles east of downtown Reno.

Great Reno Balloon Race – September 9-11 – More than 100 balloons will take to the sky this September in the nation’s largest free ballooning event. An average of 150,000 spectators make the short trip north of Reno to attend the race each year, making it one of the top events in the region.

Virginia City Camel Races – September 10-12 – The 51st annual Virginia City International Camel Races kick off just 30 minutes from Reno this September. This one-of-a-kind event is truly unlike any other race in the U.S., as the world’s top camel and ostrich jockeys gravitate to Reno from around the world for three days of races, dining, live entertainment and parades.

Street Vibrations – September 21-25 – Music, Metal and Motorcycles come to downotwn Reno this September as part of the fourth-largest motorcycle event in the nation. Live performers include The Lost Boys and Skynnyn Lynnyrd, entertainment options include a roller derby event and a bike giveaway, and the world’s coolest bikes will take center stage at each of the four venues across the Reno area.

Staying at a downtown Reno hotel will put you in the middle of the action, as Circus Circus, Eldorado and Silver Legacy hotels are all located just minutes from the city’s top August and September events. Each hotel features a wealth of amenities for everyone from couples to corporate travelers attending events to families on summer vacation.

Safari Club International 39th Annual Hunting Marketplace

This past month has been quite busy here in downtown Reno. One of the biggest events, held at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, was the Safari Club International 39th Annual Hunting Marketplace on January 26-29, 2011. With over 18,000 attendees, the event was the second-highest revenue generating SCI Annual Hunters’ Convention ever, featuring over 1,100 exhibiting companies. Several awards were given out, including the Hall of Fame Award to Dennis Anderson, International Hunter Award to Larry Higgins, and the Top Guy Award to the Alaska Chapter.

Events throughout the week included Sportsmen Against Hunger Feed the Hungry Feast which gave 2,000 meals to local Reno residents, a Sensory Safari where visually-impaired individuals could experience wildlife firsthand, and the annual SCI Political Action Committee luncheon. One of the highest-profile events at the SCI Hunters’ Convention was Sarah Palin’s keynote speech on Saturday night. Just weeks after the tragic shooting in Tucson, members of SCI are worried about potential changes in gun control laws.

During her speech, Palin spoke about everything from Dancing With the Stars to her reality show on TLC, but finally got around to addressing the elephant in the room. She spoke for the majority of the right wing when she championed the Second Amendment, and remarked how important it is that the acts of one deranged criminal do not stifle constitutionally-protected rights. She also insinuated that she may be throwing her hat in the ring for the 2012 presidential election, drawing deafening cheers from the crowd.

The convention will be back in Reno January 16-19, 2013.
